SFGMS Annual August Show News

"California Collecting"

It's time to start planning for our 2008 show, set for August 2nd and 3rd. If you are able to provide an exhibit relating to this year's theme, California Collecting, we would appreciate it. However, we also want a good selection of displays, so please don't hesitate to enter an exhibit that is not related to the theme.

Click here for a downloadable (pdf file) exhibit entry form that you can print out yourself. Forms are also attached to the May Mineralog and more are available at the clubhouse. Please complete a separate form for each exhibit you'd like to display and send to Barb Matz at the clubhouse address. Also, start thinking about how you will contribute some time to the show this year, whether to help set up and tear down, or help with some other task during the show, and keep an eye on the web site for further show information and announcements.

Royston Turquoise Mine - Group Dig!

Tonopah, Nevada... May 25th, 2008

Jay Bates has arranged a group fee-dig at the Otteson family's famous Royston Turquoise Mine on Sunday, May 25th near Tonopah, Nevada, which was recently featured on the Travel Channel's Cash and Treasures show.

Royston area turquoise is a highly prized medium blue to dark green vien and seam turquoise with brown matrix, and is very fine cutting material. This is a real opportunity to obtain some top quality turquoise - and no one leaves empty handed!

It's not too late to make your reservations, just too late to get the 50% discount on the dig fee. It's still a great opportunity at the regular dig fee of $100 for a bucket full of some of the finest turuoise to be found. Also, we've been granted access to the Broken Arrow varasite mine, also owned by the Otteson's, on Sunday afternoon after the Royston Mine as part of the SFGMS trip for no additional fee! If you'd like to go, Click here for a reservation form (for the Royston Mine) (downloadable PDF file). Fill in the form (remember the reservation date is May 25th) and mail or fax it with your payment (a min. deposit of $20.00 is required). All persons planning to go should also email Jay at jaybates@rcn.com so he can know how many will participate. There's additional information on the reservation form, and here's a link to the Otteson's web site: www.tonapahturquoise.com.

Notice to Members:

For those interested in keeping track of the the club's Board of Directors, the minutes from the monthly meetings are always posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse for your perusal. Keep an eye on the bulletin board for other notices and information that hasn't made it into the Mineralog or on to the web site.

Website Updates

To be a more valuable resource to everyone involved with the hobby of rocks, gems and minerals, our website is being updated all the time. Check back often - you may sometimes see exposed framing, dust and rough plaster, but please bear with us - most of the content remains accessible even as changes are made.
